Due to the overwhelming success of our Ecuador project and the encouragement from several Building Walls of Wisdom members we have decided to launch a second initiative for 2010. We will be participating in the rebuilding of a community destroyed in the 2004 tsunami on the east coast of Sri Lanka.
In the coming months we will be working diligently with our partners at Free the Children to determine the exact village in which we will be rebuilding a school. This decision will be based on the specific community that presents the greatest need.
Meet Disna
Eleven-year-old Disna Kumari lives in Palangathurai, Sri Lanka, with her parents and two siblings. She is a proud Grade 6 student.
Disna says she loves going to school because it gives her a chance to learn new things, play cricket in the schoolyard and spend time with her best friend, Kanchana. Her favourite subject is art and she dreams of becoming a teacher when she grows up. Going to school, she says, brings her one step closer to making that dream a reality. Disna strives to make the world a better place and truly believes that it could all start with a simple smile.
“My greatest wish is for my family to buy a house. For the children of the world, I wish they can all go to school,” she says.
With the construction of our next school in Sri Lanka we hope to give more children the opportunity that Disna has had and move one step closer to fulfilling our common dream of living in a world where all children can go to school.
