Reaffirming Trip to Sri Lanka

The Building Walls of Wisdom founder, Geoff Morgan, and our director of publications, Emma Wilmot, recently took a trip to Sri Lanka to visit the community where the new school is to be built. Below is Geoff’s reflection on the trip and the community that we will be helping.

Sri Lanka has to be one of the most alluring places on earth. With kilometers of pristine golden beaches lined with palm trees, lush green jungles and fields of tea plantations the scenery is hard to beat. The landscape is second only to the beautiful people who inhabit this small country off the southeastern coast of India.

During my last visit I had the opportunity to spend some time in the community of Thalahena where Building Walls of Wisdom is constructing our next school. In rural areas such as these many children do not attend school. Reflecting on the lack of educational opportunity these children have has renewed my determination to cultivate an informed empathy about the urgency in which we need to act.

“The future is not someplace we are going but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found but made, and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination.” – John Schaar

Our future of unprecedented global interdependence does not have to be one in which millions are denied the opportunity to go to school. I believe we can create a world in which every person without exception has access to education. More importantly I believe that we all possess the ability to create profound, meaningful and lasting change in the world. As more people learn about the power of collective action we will begin to alter the course of history for the 1.5 billion children that are currently not attending school.

This belief is not rooted in philosophy or theory it is an unshakable conviction that universal education has never been more feasible. We have already made it happen in communities in both Kenya and Ecuador.

As you know, Building Walls of Wisdom is now working on funding our third school in Sri Lanka. We welcome you to join us in our pledge to eradicate poverty through the development of education in any capacity you wish.
